Steve Anderson, a loving father and water treatment facility advisor is inspired by a self-help tape to quit his job and find his happiness. Even though he assumes his wife will understand, his hasty decision ultimately leads to their divorce and joint custody of their two young children, Logan and Taylor.
Steve moves in with David, his best friend and a bar owner. The two of them live above a bar until his life is once again flipped around when Steve receives a call from his estranged brother Brad. Brad shares news that their dementia-ridden father will need additional care and that he is no longer willing to provide it. Now Steve needs to go to California to pick up his dad and bring him back to Wisconsin.
Steve is joined on this trip by a young aspiring musician, Connor and his sister Sarah, a college graduate struggling to figure what to do with her life next. Together three of them are now on a cross country journey in pursuit of happiness and new purpose in life
